North Carolina
PROJECT: Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study
LOCATION: Chapel Hill, NC
SCHEDULE: January 1994 - August 1994
PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The Countryside Basin, approximately 720 acres, is located within the Orange Water and
Sewer Authority service area in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The collection system for
this basin is made up of approximately 50,000 linear feet of 8" sewer main, 300
manholes and three pump stations. The Authority decided that within a year, they needed to
develop a program that would identify inflow and infiltration problems in the collection
system so that they would be able to plan for and implement strategic cost-effective
rehabilitation measures.
PROJECT SCOPE:
Wade & Associates conducted a comprehensive sanitary sewer evaluation survey of the
system in the Countryside Basin. The survey's scope included the following: wastewater
flow and rainfall monitoring; data analysis; field inspection and testing services
including manhole inspections, visual pipe inspections, smoke testing, dyed-water testing,
wet-weather inspections, flow isolation, and cleaning/television inspections; data entry
for creation of computer model; I/I analysis and prioritization; development of a
computer-aided hydraulic model; creation of final report; and software delivery. Since a
timely solution was important to the Authority, Wade & Associates placed a high
priority on direct and frequent communication with OWASA. Staff members developed a
comprehensive public relations plan and accompanying manual to streamline the distribution
of information to residents and businesses in the study area.
